Man against machine… nope, not the way I role!
Kings, doing both the run and the cycle… multisport or nothing

Not being able to race Ironman SA 2013 I have decided to dedicate this big challenge to our team athletes taking part at Ironman.
Not having done much hill running I knew this would be a challenge in all respects, especially getting onto my MTB after running 17km.
After being very late for start, I just managed to make the starting line as the gun went off, the 1st 5km of jeep track was by far the easier part… as soon as we hit the water point on halfway the gradient averaged around 9%.

The weather truly played its part by not a cloud in sight and Table Mountain, False Bay and Cape Point at its BEST!
After 67mins of climbing I finished the run, took in the breath taking scenery and started making the 6km descent back to the start via Elephants Eye.
I could feel my cycling legs disappearing as I descent with my quads starting to burn more as I took each step.

As soon as I got to my car I had to get my MTB ready to head back up to the mast.
Cycling shoes on, helmet clipped in and 32Gi Accelerate energy drink with 32Gi Tablets checked.
From the word go the pace set by the front cyclist was way too fast for my tired legs, I just settled in on my own speed and wanting to make sure I get to the top in one piece.
It was very motivating as we’re going up and the “machines”(cyclist only) were coming doing and given us words of encouragements like “rather you than me” or “I would die if I had to run and cycle up”.
The mtb up to the mast was a challenge on its own and I really had to fight to make it to the top, even though I love climbing on a mtb…
After crossing the finish line in a time of 66mins I head back down and only then realised how steep this climb was… felt like my brakes were going to give in, even though it was a brand new pair of brake pads.
Complements to the race organisers and race village, very well organised event and will encourage my friends to challenge me in the future.
Special thanks to my supporters and sponsors:
32Gi, Cape Auto Centre, Power Protection Testing, Glider Eyewear and Tuna Brands.
